Mobile TV

There’s a mobile TV conference next to my office again – the next big thing is apparently going to be television beamed into our cellphones, for which we will apparently pay good money. I don’t know about any of you, but I don’t think that’s a service I’ll be subscribing to.

What I would like is to be able to subscribe to TV stations, a la carte, from all over the world via the Internet. So I’d maybe pay for More4 and the BBC channels from the UK, CNN, HBO and Comedy Central from the States (okay, I admit, I’d also subscribe to the Fox News Channel for its sheer comedy value) and some German stations. Maybe Al-Jazeera too, for interest’s sake. They’d be delivered in streaming video through the ‘net to my PC or a set-top box and I’d send them to my TV using a standard video output jack.

But will someone deliver this service? No. Instead I get offered the football through my telephone; not so much digital revolution as an old dog learning new tricks. Maybe some day …
