Open source VoIP

OpenZoep is a GPL-licensed open source VoIP client for Windows, Mac and Linux. They’re promoting an extension to the XMPP/Jabber spec that would allow for SIP calls using XMPP networks, which would finally allow for an interoperable peer to peer voice system.

XMPP really does seem like the technology of the moment – there’s this, and people are discovering that the implementation used by Google Talk contains a single sign on solution (presumably the thing that’s powering the recent integration of Gmail and Google Talk). It does have a multitude of uses; I think we’ll be seeing more from the protocol before long …
