Hi Jonathan - check out the discussion with Tim above. There will be an upgrade from the classic branch to Elgg 1.x.

great to hear. being able to have control over the data (and user terms, advertising, etc) are the key reason why elgg makes sense over alternatives like facebook groups or Ning. I agree there is a difference in that I do have the access to the data (though no deined migration ey). Dave did send me a tweet to participate in testing migration scripts/docs (which I'm happy to do), so all seems good. Must be a busy time for you guys...

I think it's a markedly different case because Elgg is open source and the data is freely exploitable. The barrier is in terms of coding and time rather than commercial.

Nonetheless, I recognise that it is a barrier. The discontinuation of a software branch does illustrate why import/export formats are important. You'll hopefully be pleased to know that there are upgrade scripts in progress.

Yes, I am very interested to know as well if there will be an upgrade path from 0.9 to 1.5.

Intersting points, Ben, but "lock in" isn't limited to commercial vendors. I feel trapped in Elgg 0.9 becuase of no clear migration to 1.x for users. Hopefully this isn't being forgotten in 1.5, as it was repeatedly stated it would be there, yet it didn't show on the roadmap last time I was there.
