Web apps are just the new way of making money from software

Shareware - nobody buys
Adware/Spyware - everybody hates

yet if you do everything server-side as with web applications then people are willing to accept the ads and the restrictions.

While I am broadly in favour of web-based applications, I realized while reading this that I don't use any, other than incidentally. I use email and mobileme to sync various settings and the like, I use DropBox to throw stuff somewhere 'safe'.. but that's about it. I stopped using Flickr about two years ago and only opened a Google Docs account yesterday. On my iPhone, because I was bored.

And yet I have quite happily paid for apps like Pixelmator, VoodooPad and Scrivener because they feel good to use. They feel like I own them. They sit on my Mac quite happily and I click on them and they work. I don't have to rely on anything to make them work. They don't sit on someone elses server and are not in any way performance tied to whether BT can be bothered making my t'internet work today.

Now, I am aware that web apps are a very good idea, and free is always nice. I suppose I just feel dislocated when I'm working in a browser rather than the relatively solid feel of an app sitting on my HD
