Elgg Spaces: a learning community in a box

Dave’s already written about it, but because I’m totally psyched – that’s a technical term – about the project, I thought I’d also put down a few words.

Elgg Spaces will be a turnkey solution that allows anyone to sign up and, there and then, receive their own Elgg installation. You can either have a domain name of the form yoursite.elggspaces.com / yoursite.elggspaces.org, or point a domain name of your own to the system. So if you wanted, you could run community.yourschool.edu or yourcommunity.com.

Administration is all via a web front end, so no more fiddling with config.php. And, of course, the whole thing is managed by the team that produces Elgg. The system will have all the latest updates, so all you have to worry about is your users. A selection of extra services will be available to help you maintain your space.

Much as we did for Elgg.net back in 2004, we’ve got a beta signup page; stick in your email address and we’ll let you know when it’s ready.

Another project underway is our new blog, The Internet is People, which takes a different look at web technologies both inside and outside of education. You may have seen a number of my posts there automatically appear on my Elgg.net weblog – my Elgg space is still your one-stop shop for all the content I produce, as it should be – and there will be many more to come.

There are a few more projects in the pipeline, including a news and reviews blog for e-learning technology, so watch this space …
